1. Visa Information

When inviting an international student for joint research, the D-2-5 Research Visa is commonly used.
Visa issuance is handled by the local Korean consulate. Therefore, it is recommended that the student(applicant) explain their situation to the consulate and confirm the appropriate visa type.

2. Document Submission Procedure

In principle, applications should be submitted within three months before the research start date.
If documents are prepared too early, the Immigration Office may request resubmission with an updated date and a new university president’s seal after your arrival in Korea and during the Alien Registration Card process.

Key Document: Research Student Confirmation Form, which requires the President’s seal of Seoul National University.

In order to obtain the President’s official seal on the Research Student Confirmation Form, all of the documents listed under No. 3 must be prepared.

All supporting documents must be prepared and submitted through the official document route:
Department → College of Engineering → Headquarters General Affairs Office.

Keep note that completion of all approvals and issuance of the president’s seal may take approximately two weeks.

※ Contact for inquiries: munseon@snu.ac.kr

3. Required Documents

All documents must be written in Korean or English. If they are in any other language, a notarized translation must be submitted.
Self-translations are not permitted, and all translations must be notarized.
Since this may be costly, we recommend requesting that your university issue the documents in English.

As of April 1, 2026, additional documents are required.
(The newly added documents are marked in blue.)

1) Copy of passport (valid for at least 6 months) – 1 copy

8) Tuberculosis (TB) Medical Certificate Requirement Notice (D-2-5 Visa Applicants)

Some applicants for the D-2-5 visa may be required to submit a tuberculosis (TB) medical certificate depending on their nationality and overseas residence history.

* Who must submit a TB certificate?

You must submit a TB medical certificate if you meet any one of the following conditions:
1. Nationals of designated TB high-risk countries
Applicants holding citizenship of one of the countries designated by the Korean government as TB high-risk countries (35 countries)
2. Long-term stay in a TB high-risk country
Applicants who have stayed for 6 months or longer (continuous stay) in a TB high-risk country within the recent period (e.g., within the past year or before entry)

* Important Notes
Short-term stays (less than 6 months) are not subject to this requirement.
If your country is not on the TB high-risk country list, you are generally not required to submit a TB certificate.
However, additional submission may be requested during the visa issuance or alien registration process depending on individual circumstances.

Applicants who are nationals of TB high-risk countries or who have stayed 6 months or longer in such countries must submit a TB medical certificate.

If obtaining the documents in English from the school will take too long, it may be acceptable for a responsible professor or staff member at the school to verify them. The verification must include their signature and the school’s official seal or logo.
This option should only be used in cases where time is extremely limited.

※ After all required documents are submitted and the president’s official seal is obtained, the stamped Research Student Confirmation Form, along with a copy of Seoul National University’s business registration certificate, will be emailed to the applicant.

※ To apply for a D-2-5 visa, applicants are required to submit a “Research Student Confirmation Form” issued by the university where the inviting professor is affiliated, bearing the official seal of the university president.
The consulate generally provides guidance on the appropriate visa type and a list of required documents. Therefore, you may have already received this information from them.

Please note that obtaining the university president’s seal is not a simple or immediate process at any university. Certain documents must be prepared and submitted in advance. For this reason, you were asked to provide the required documents listed on this website.

The Research Student Confirmation Form with the university president’s official seal, along with the Certificate of Business Registration of Seoul National University, will be sent to the applicant by email.

In summary, applicants must personally submit their visa application to the consulate. To support this process, the university will provide the necessary documents, including the Research Student Confirmation Form bearing the official seal of the university president. All required documents should be prepared and submitted together to the consulate.

4. Important Notes for Research Visa(D-2-5) Holders

This visa is different from the official exchange student or visiting student programs at Seoul National University. It is a non-degree status intended only for short-term research collaboration (for example, working as an intern in a professor’s lab).

Since holders of the D-2-5 visa do not have an official SNU student or staff affiliation, it is difficult to issue a student ID or staff number. As a result, access to certain campus services and benefits will be limited.

Restricted Services May Include:
- Dormitory accommodation
- Library services

5. Building and Laboratory Access / This section will be updated soon.

After arriving in Korea, please follow these steps:
1) Open a mobile phone line in Korea.
2) Download the temporary campus access application used by SNU.
3) Complete the required information in the application.
4) Your department’s building access manager will review and approve your request.

6. Library Access / This section will be updated soon.
You may obtain a temporary library access pass to use free services.
Paid services (such as book borrowing) are available after paying the required fee.
