The Department of Architecture was founded on the idea that architecture creates public places for human beings to live and work, as well as a public identity that distinguishes a city. By educating architects on the basis of this definition, the school aims to express the mutual values of human beings and society with creativity and imagination, applying appropriate contextualization, construction, architectural characteristics, tradition, and technology.

Since 2002, the Department of Architecture has offered two majors, Architecture and Architectural Engineering. The Architecture major is a five-year curriculum that is designed for the education of architects, and the Architectural Engineering major is a four year curriculum designed for the education of architect engineers to teach students how to apply engineering principles to the design and construction of buildings.

The Architecture curriculum uses coursework and specialized training to help students acquire the following knowledge and skills.

The Department is enforcing the integration (synthesis) process from 2016 and recruit students without classifying major. All students at the department will take the integration course during 1st and 2nd year. When they are at a third grade level, their major will be separated as Architecture and Architectural Engineering by classifying major process.

  1. A high level of practical problem solving ability
  2. An understanding of architecture in terms of art and diverse cultures
  3. The ability to apply their knowledge in various related areas such as city, landscape, and interior construction
  4. The ability to recognize and practice architectural ethics
  5. An understanding of the architectural traditions of different regions in order to support succession and protection
  6. Communication skills that support international cooperation

The goal of the Architectural Engineering curriculum
is to cultivate talented personnel that can bring innovation and sustainable development to the construction industry.

The following goals are addressed by balanced coursework in basic and specialized topics.

  1. To cultivate capable personnel and business leaders by providing basic but functional instruction
  2. To foster global leaders in the construction industry by presenting international practices and knowledge
  3. To develop strong technical and research skills in order to raise the Korean construction industry’s position in the world

Career Opportunities

Students may work as architects in design offices or become engineers in private construction companies. They may also become professors, public service personnel, directors of architecture-related institutes, or architectural critics, playing an important leadership role in the architectural culture in Korea.

Research Areas

Architecture Major

The major is focused on the planning aspect of architectural design. It includes the history of architecture, human/societal research related to architecture, theory and criticism of architecture, architectural expert systems and computer applications, and urban conservation and design. The following research/education areas are covered.

Main Research/Education Areas
Architectural Design
History of Architecture
Theory and Criticism of Architecture
Architectural Expert Systems and Computer Applications
Urban Conservation and Design

Architectural planning applies the principles of adequate design and spatial composition according to the intended use, and architectural design endows the composition with an original shape. Through this design process, architects combine their perspective on a building’s intended use, composition, and economic efficiency within the context of the culture and city.

Architectural theory and history examine the history of architecture, understanding each generation’s norms and way of thinking and investigating the relationship between architecture and society. This knowledge is then applied at the city level in a way that combines design and technology.

Architectural Engineering Major

Architectural engineering consists primarily of structural engineering (designing the dynamics of structures), building environmental technology (for the purpose of energy conservation), and building technology (actualizing the design). The following research/education areas are covered.

Main Research/Education Areas
Building Environmental Technology
Structural Engineering
Reinforced Concrete and Steel Structure Design
Building Materials and Technology
Building Construction Engineering and Management

The structural engineering area focuses on understanding the dynamics of the architectural structure, using information to acquire the right materials and finally to design secure and creative structures. Precise calculations are then used to actualize the formation and structure composed by the architect to produce a more economical and safer structure.

The building environmental technology area considers the environment surrounding structures and facilities, adding new elements of the environment and energy use into the traditional conception of architecture. As a result, more pleasant and energy-saving structures are developed, the temperature, lighting, and sound within the structure are planned, and research into architectural automation is conducted. The building technology area focuses on developing technology for the optimization of the entire building process and its management. Research in this area covers the efficient use of materials, human resources, and equipment.
