Energy resources such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas, and mineral resources such as iron, copper, and uranium, are all necessities for economic development. However, because of limited resources, many countries are working toward stable, secure procurement of these resources. With the development of China and India in the 21st century, the demand for these energy and mineral resources has abruptly increased. Because the entire world is concerned about this matter, it is now crucial to secure the technology necessary to lead energy resource development and foster talent in this global community in order to manage a complex supply and demand strategy. The department tries to lead the industry by overcoming the lack of supply and the environmental problems arising from resource consumption.

The Energy Resources Engineering curriculum concentrates on the following in order to meet the future demands of society: fossil fuels, renewable energy, exploration and development of mineral resources, resource storage, recycling, and distribution, economic policies regarding energy, and other areas of environmental change.

Career Opportunities

Graduates enter government divisions, public corporations, universities, research institutes, and other companies. The following organizations typically employ students who earn degrees in this department.

Research Areas

Majors in the Department of Energy Resources Engineering are divided into four main topics: energy resource systems, new energy source/mineral resource exploration and development, the geological environment and human living environment, and construction foundations. The research areas in each major are listed below.

Energy Resource Systems
에너지 자원 개발시스템 분야 연구항목
Resource Development Systems Research focuses on devising a series of systems for resource development, such as resource exploration inside/outside of the country, development, contracting, and investing, in order to produce the optimal equipment/personnel investment plan.
Energy/Environmental Economy
and Policy
On the basis of scientific technologies, energy and environmental problems are analyzed, and solutions are investigated. This area is further divided into topics such as energy resource economics, environmental economics management, and technology industry economics.
Resource Refinement and Recovery Technology for separating and refining mineral and oil resources from natural resources and scrapped materials is developed. Experiments based on physics and chemistry are implemented to obtain effective separation methods.
Renewable Energy Research investigates the efficient production and supply of various potential alternative to fossil fuels, such as solar, wind, and bioenergy.
New Energy/Mineral Resource Exploration and Development
신재생에너지분야 연구항목
/Gas Exploration
/Development and Production
Research is conducted to create new physical exploration techniques and production technologies to extract petroleum/natural gas and future sources of energy from oil sands, mineral pitch, and underground mineral resources.
Earth Chemical Exploration By collecting rocks, soil, natural water, and plants from the earth’s surface, elements associated with mineral deposits are determined to facilitate the search for underground mineral deposits.구
Geothermal Heat/Gas Hydrates Research focuses on developing methods of generating electricity or air conditioning using the vapor created by inserting a hot dry rock deep into the earth. Gas hydrates in cold, high-pressure environments such as the ocean floor are also explored.
Liquefied Coal
/Coal Gas Development
This area has attracted much interest with increases in oil prices. Research is conducted in order to develop technology for producing energy sources that are more environmentally friendly and efficient than coal.
Geological and Human Environment
지구환경 및 인간생활환경 분야 연구항목
Environmental Geochemistry
Contamination by radon, heavy metals, and organic matter are examined in mines, oil fields, and industrial areas. Evaluating the toxicity and purifying, treating, and restoring the environment are studied here,
Recycling Engineering This research area is essential for building a sustainable, resource-circulating society. Technology for recycling limited resources, conserving resources for the future, and decreasing environmental pollution from wastes is investigated.
Radioactive Waste Disposal /Subterranean Water Modeling Research examines on-site surveying and construction technologies as well as thermal mathematical dynamic analysis technologies for addressing the recent problem of low/intermediate/high-level radioactive waste sites.
Geological Disaster Reduction
/Disaster Engineering
Solutions and preventive methods are proposed for disasters such as floods, earthquakes, landslides, and building collapse by understanding the mathematical dynamic nature of the soil and bedrock.
Construction Foundations
에너지인프라 및 건설기반 분야 연구항목
Blasting and Tunnel Design Research focuses on blasting design techniques, vibration control techniques, and building dismantlement by blasting. In addition, research on tunnel digging and reinforcement technology is implemented, supported by an understanding of bedrock.
Underground Energy Storage
/Underground Space Design
The storage of crude oil, liquefied propane gas, and liquefied natural gas in the underground rock floor is investigated. Construction technology for underwater pumped water plants, underground compressed air storehouses, and other underground construction technologies is also developed.
Geotechnology Site Examination
/Evaluation and Analysis
Technology is developed to predict the behavior of rock at construction sites by scientific analysis of the characteristics of surface and subterranean water.구
GIS/Remote Exploration A geographic information system (GIS) is organized using precise measurements, ground information databases, and visual processing technology. In addition, remote exploration, 3D modeling techniques, and other new information technologies are applied to develop mining GISs, ground-sinking analyzing GISs, and integrated subterranean water management systems
