Seoul National University College of Engineering Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Wonyong Sung (59 years old) was selected as a Distinguished Fellow by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

IEEE has more than 40 million members in more than 160 countries and is the world’s largest prestigious institute in the area of communications and electronics.  IEEE has helped publish a total of 30% of the documents in related to electrical engineering, computer science, and telecommunications and has enacted more than 900 industry standards.

The IEEE awards distinguished fellow  membership to individuals who ultimately contribute important developments to society, such as research and development achievements of outstanding qualities and to members of more than ten years of experience in their respective fields.  The total number of scholars elected annually are limited to within 0.1% of the total number of members with voting rights.  IEEE distinguished fellows membership has been recognized as a very important achievement and honor.

Every year, one to three awarded individuals are Seoul National University professors.  In 2010, three awardees, in 2011 and in 2012 there was one awardee, and in 2013 there were two awardees.  This is a very rare case even in the academic community where more than half of the 30 or so IEEE fellows in Korea are a professor at Seoul National University.

Professor Sung Wonyong received his B.S. degree in Electronic Engineering from Seoul National University in 1978.  He completed his Master’s degree in Eletrical Engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 1980, and received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 1987.  Since 1989, Professor Sung has been a member of the Seoul National University’s faculty.  He has been actively researching digital signal processing and multimedia systems.  In addition to many other obligations, Professor Sung also serve as the IEEE Technical Committee chairman.
