Cultivate vegetables using fertilizer produced in eco-friendly recycling toilet ‘Tori’
- Innovative toilet ‘Tori(土利)’ that is beneficial to soil, can produce fertilizer that are even better than ordinary fertilizer
-Without water, can separate urine and stool

Seoul National University College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced on 13th the result of cultivating crops with the fertilizer produced by an innovative eco-friendly recycling toilet “Tori”, which was developed by the Center for Sustainable Water Management (Director Prof. HanMoo Young). The event, which harvests the vegetables(daikon) that were cultivated with the fertilizer produced by Tori, will be held on November 13th (Monday) at 12:00 in the Nowon-gu Cheonsu garden.
Tori is a toilet that applies an oriental mindset that thinks of human waste as fertilizer whereas human waste is considered as a garbage in the Western’s viewpoint.
The conventional toilet requires a complicated processing method to purify fertilizer since it stores stool and urine simultaneously. However, because Tori separates stool and urine without using water, it is possible to produce liquefied fertilizer through a very simple method.
A research team at Seoul National University installed Tori in a Cheonsu garden managed by Nowon Urban Agricultural Network (CEO Eunsoo Lee) and analyzed the effects of fertilizer produced in Tori on the plant growth and soil properties.
The research team compared the plant growth using five different type of soils ((1) general soil, (2) soil using commercially available fertilizer, (3) soil using liquefied fertilizer produced by Tori (4) soil using compost produced by Tori (5) soil using both liquefied fertilizer and compost produced by Tori). They found type (5) soil is the most effective for the plant growth.
An official at the Chenosu garden said, "The general fertilizer costs 20,000 to 30,000 won per 20kg, but the fertilizer produced in the Tori is not only cheap, but it is even better."
The research team said, "Tori improved the efficiency of fertilizer production by devising a non-water fertilizer production method. Also, it has ventilation system on the bottom side, so it smells better than the ordinary toilets.”
The results of the study on Tori can be applied not only to the garden of other farmers in other cities but also to remote areas such as highways, islands, mountains, and underdeveloped countries where tap water and sewage facilities (sewer piping, sewage treatment facilities) are not available.
