Seoul National University's College of Engineering announced on November 18 (Thursday) that it has successfully completed the 2021 College of Engineering's Career Festival that took place for five days from November 8 (Monday) to November 12 (Friday).

The event was held by the College of Engineering and the College of Engineering Student Association to provide career exploration opportunities to current students who have unfortunately experienced reduced opportunities to receive career advice and information due to the weakened interaction between seniors and juniors caused by COVID-19 and to help improve these students to understand various fields.

A total of five areas were addressed: research/employment/start-up/professional jobs/specialized, and in the first part, speakers were invited and lectures were broadcast live on YouTube so that students could learn about each field.

In the second part that followed, mentors from each field were recruited, and mentoring time for each group was continued through the Zoom program.

In the lecture that was held on November 8 (Monday), as a students’ senior mentor who is walking the path of an academic, Professor Saerom Park of the Department of Convergence Security Engineering at Sungshin Women's University (Seoul National University's Department of Industrial Engineering, Class of 2009) provided some honest advice and insight into the concerns regarding career setting and the qualities and attitude required for academics in the long term. Moreover, she urged the students that although success is important, one must not put off their happiness by being buried in their success and proposed a way to align happiness in the same direction as what they are currently doing.

In the lecture that was held on the November 10 (Wednesday), representative patent attorney Moonho Kang (Seoul National University's Department of Chemical Engineering, Class of 1992) of the Damin Patent Law Firm revealed his thoughts on the selection of elective subjects for the patent attorney examination and the completion of master's and doctoral studies, providing detailed information about how to prepare to become a patent attorney. In addition, he shared various experiences and his thoughts, including the attitude one must have as a patent attorney as well as how rewarding it can be, expanding the students' understanding of the job, and encouraged the students to take up the challenge if they wish to do something, regardless of the results.

In the lecture that was held on November 12 (Friday), Won-ho Shin, Product Director of CJ ENM (Seoul National University's Department of Applied Chemistry, Class of 1994) introduced the career path of the broadcasting industry, which is unfamiliar for most engineering students, and delivered his honest story about the journey.

In addition, he gave meaningful advice to students by sharing his personal views on the process of preparing for the broadcasting station PD recruitment test, which is difficult enough to be called a state exam, as well as his experiences such as what results his attitude has produced in the series of choices he faced as a PD.

Finally, he did not forget to be affectionate with the students, saying how he would like them to live amidst the sense of small fulfillment and happiness by setting various dreams, such as targets that one wishes to accomplish by tomorrow or targets that will be fulfilled within a week, rather than being pressured by limiting one's dreams to a single career path.

After the event, many students expressed their thoughts, with one student saying, “it was an opportunity to listen to lectures that were greatly helpful,” while another said, “I think I have narrowed the scope of my own career as an engineering student," and expressed his aspirations by saying, “I will try and search for a career with a more flexible perspective.”
