Dr. Sunyoung Park of SNU College of Engineering Appointed as Assistant Professor at The University of Chicago

Dr. Sunyoung Park, a graduate of SNU's Department of Energy Resources and Engineering and Energy Systems Engineering, was appointed to be an assistant professor of the Department of the Geophysical Sciences at The University of Chicago, a prestigious private university in the United States.
Dr. Park's research fields vary throughout the wide spectrum of seismology, and each of her research works provide insight into new perspectives and methodologies, attracting the attention of the academic community. Examples of her research topics include the deep and shallow structure of the Earth, earthquakes that occur in deep Earth as well as her joint research with SNU Professor Changsoo Shin regarding seismic wave measurements using 3D printing.
Dr. Park graduated from Seoul National University in 2010 with a B.S. degree in Energy Resources Engineering and completed a double major program in economics, earning herself its B.A. degree. She then completed her M.S. degree of Energy Systems Engineering in 2012 under the guidance of Professor Changsoo Shin at the Geophysics Exploration Laboratory, after which she received her Ph.D in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard University.
She is currently a Texaco Postdoctoral Fellow at the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences in the California Institute of Technology, a course that selects only one individual per year, , and she is scheduled to join as an assisstant professor in the University of Chicago from the month of June, 2021.
Dr. Park was appointed as the first professor of seismology in the history of the University of Chicago. "I feel responsible for the new seismology laboratory at the University of Chicago, but most of all, I am beyond grateful for the support I was given to be able to independently conduct diverse research within my field," said Dr. Park.
