SNU College of Engineering announces that the Department of Environmental Engineering (Professor Moo Young Han) and the Urban Agriculture Network (CEO Yeo Yeong-Ok) have co-hosted the “6th SNU Building 35 Rooftop Garden Gimjang Sharing” from 16th to 17th with the support of SNU College of Engineering’s Education Research Foundation.
The participants include 30 international students studying at SNU, 30 Gwanak local residents, and 20 SNU faculty, professor, and students. On the first day, approximately 200 cabbages have been salted. On the following day from 10AM to 5PM, the salted cabbages have been made into kimchi. The finished kimchi is planned to be donated to SNU international students and Gwanak local residents who are in need.
The Department of Environmental Engineering has turned its building’s rooftop into a concave rain garden open to local residents and students. The garden is complemented for strengthening the bond between SNU and local community through collaborative farming activities.
This event has brought together students who lack farming skills and local residents who lack farming land to raise and harvest crop with their own sweat and rain. The donation of the finished kimchi is an expression of neighborly love to those in need.
Professor Han states, “The concave rooftop rain garden saves electricity, minimizes building’s heat island effect, and prevents flooding. To carry out social responsibilities, we hope many buildings under government possession can also remodel into this rain garden for them to serve as platforms for communication between the school and local community.”
