SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kook Heon Char) announced on 21st that Professor U Kang of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering had been nominated as the recipient of the 10-Year Highest-Impact Paper Award at an international conference on the field of data mining.

This award, given out by IEEE ICDM (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, International Conference on Data Mining), recognizes a research paper that has had the greatest influence on the field of data mining.

The recognized article is the “PEGASUS: A Peta-Scale Graph Mining System” presented to ICDM in 2009, which has Professor Kang as its first author. The paper has been cited over 730 times. Its content handles the graph mining package that effectively processes large-scale graphs of distributed computing. Kang, through the article, suggested a simple yet crucial algorithm that generalizes various graph mining operations and followed up to develop an effective algorithm that works in big-data systems.

Professor Kang expressed, “I am honored for the recognition. I will continue to devote to investigating the field of data mining.”

The award ceremony was hosted on Nov. 20th 2018 at the ICDM 2018 in Singapore.
