Two graduate researchers Giwon Kim (master candidate) and SeungRyul Shin (doctoral candidate) of SNU Interdisciplinary Program of Technology Management, Economics and Policy (TEMEP) under their academic advisor Professor Jina Kang received the Best Paper Award at the 2018 Autumn Conference of the Korean Strategic Management Society.
The Best Paper Award is given to the first author(s) of a single, outstanding research paper of all the researches presented at the conference. Kim received attention for being nominated as a master candidate.
The two researchers presented their work under the title of “Technological Innovation by R&D Researchers via Social Network and Knowledge Network: During Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) for Technological Innovation.” The research investigated the phases of technological innovation of enterprises under M&A at the level of individual researchers.
Taking the cooperation and knowledge network of enterprise into consideration, Kim explained the changes in the innovational activities of researchers after M&A depending on their network characteristics. Furthermore, Kim supported his investigation by conducting case studies on approximately 500 R&D researchers and their 7000 patent licenses granted before and after M&A.
Kim who received his bachelor’s degree on the Nanomaterials Science and Engineering at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) and is currently studying for master’s degree at SNU stated, “For companies to achieve desired results after M&A for technological innovation, they must preserve their researchers… by revealing the characteristics of the researchers during M&A... I suggest such human resource strategy.”
Kim who aims to be an “ambidextrous, talented individual” with knowledge in both engineering and humanities at the Fourth Industrial Revolution expressed after receiving the award, “I will research various R&D strategies that will bring about technological innovations for the Korean industry to overcome the crisis of Fourth Industrial Revolution.”
Researcher Shin who was the other recipient of the award received his bachelor’s degree on Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and is currently a doctoral candidate at SNU. He is conducting researches for constructing business eco-system between large and start-up companies.
Shin stated, “This research encourages large companies to voluntarily make the best use of their M&A by optimizing the use of human resources. The venture eco-system grows and strengthens with active M&A between large companies with great capital and technology and start-ups with innovational skills and ideas.”
