SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kook Heon Char) announced on 29th that Professor Jong Gye Shin of the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering has received an Order of Service Merit Red Stripes medal as a recognition of his contributions to the development of the software industry.
The ceremony was held during the “19th Software Industry Day” celebration on November 26th at EL Tower, Seoul.
Professor Shin introduced software technology to shipbuilding and marine engineering to lead the development of the Smart Shipyard technology. He contributed to the creation of a new market by developing a software that describes the bending of the ship hull plate and a software for the curved surface forming of hull plate.
Professor Shin expressed, “I have been conducting researches on combining the core technologies of ship building with software development technologies. I thank all the graduate students who have participated in my researches. The software convergence with manufacturing technologies is a strength that Korean industries have against others and will definitely contribute to raising the competitiveness of our ship building industry.”
Shin won his first Elmer L. Hann Award of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) for systematizing the line heating theory of curved-surface machining in 2001 and received his second Elmer Hann Award from SNAME for his research findings on triangle heating based on line heating technology in 2014. He was also nominated one of the “14 Korean Scientists that Creates the Future” by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
