▲ SOCAR Acquires Polariant, an Indoor Positional Tracking Startup
SNU College of Engineering announced on 29th that Polariant, a startup established by Mr. Hyouk (Andrew) Jang who is also a MS candidate at the Vision & Learning Laboratory (Professor Gunhee Kim) of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, was acquired by SOCAR in April.
Polariant, co-founded by Hyouk (Andrew) Jang, Henry Jeon, and Jaden Choi, develops precise, indoor positional tracking technology using polarized light sensing.
The positional tracking technology can be used indoors in places like the underground parking lot, large shopping malls, and airports where global positioning system (GPS) cannot be connected to locate position and determine travel route. Since the establishment of Polariant, the startup has grown by attracting investment from Naver, Bluepoint Partners, Actor Yong-Joon Bae, NP Equity Partners, etc.
SOCAR, being the leading mobility platform holder in Korea, delivered across its plans to focus on the development and enhancement of mobility platform technology with Polariant. Taking a step forward from the accumulated technologies on precise, indoor positional tracking, the new aim is specifically a technology enhancement for the massive growth of mobility industry and a development of a durable location intelligence solution.
Jang was not only nominated for the Next Generation Engineering Leader Award by the National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK) in 2016, he was also the recipient of the Talent Award of Korea, an award bestowed by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, in 2017. With the support of SNU College of Engineering, Jang also served as the Chair of Student Committee for the WEEF (World Engineering Education Forum) & GEDC (Global Engineering Dean’s Council) in 2016 where he had the opportunity to extend his business network.
Jang stated, “This M&A pioneered new paths for tech startups. I thank Professor Gunhee Kim of the Vision & Learning Lab whom I constantly seek for technical advice.”
