SNU Aerospace Vehicle Design Laboratory’s Student Team CRANE, wins second place in the American Vertical Flight Society Design Competition

-Showcases a helicopter design with the theme of "High Altitude Mountain Rescue Transport"

SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced on the 30th of September that the CRANE team from the Aerospace Vehicle Design Laboratory of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering won the Rookie and the Runner-Up Prize for Graduate Students at the 36th Design Competition. CRANE is the first Asian team to win the Rookie and Runner-Up Prize.
 
The CRANE team presented a uniquely shaped winged helicopter equipped with a hybrid engine. The helicopter proved its excellent efficiency and safety even at high altitudes, an accomplishment that led to their Runner-Up Prize. The 10-member team, including Sekwon Kang, completed the task under the guidance of Professor Kwanjung Yee of the SNU Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
 
The 36th Annual Student Design Competition was organized by the Vertical Flight Society, which is known to be most prestigious in the helicopter field and was sponsored by Airbus, the world's largest airline company. Annually assessing the progress of projects developed over the past year, the theme for the 36th annual contest was 'Extreme Altitude Mountain Rescue Vehicle'. SNU Professor Kwanjung Yee claimed that, "It was an opportunity to showcase SNU's uniquely new helicopter design technology."
 
The CRANE team developed its project from August 15, 2018 to May 31, 2019 under the guidance of Professor Kwanjung Yee and collaborated with Konkuk University Professor Chang-Joo Kim of the Department of Aerospace Information Engineering to finally present their results.
