SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced on November 1 that RippleAI and Professor Gunhee Kim's Team of SNU Department of Computer Science won first and second place in two AI challenge competitions held at the ICCV 2019 (International Conference on Computer Vision 2019), the world's largest academic conference in computer vision.

RippleAI is an artificial intelligence startup founded in SNU Professor Gunhee Kim's research laboratory that received its initial investment from Kakao Ventures and is a company that develops a dialogue and advertising system that encompasses all data formats (natural language, photography, video and emoticons) used online. The RipleyAI - SNU Team, with Professor Gunhee Kim at the center, involved the collaboration of graduate students and researchers including Youngjae Yu, Jiwan Chung, , Jongseok Kim, Heeseung Yun, Yooncheol Choi and Sunghwan Lee.

Their first competition that they participated in, LSMDC (Large Scale Movie Description and Understanding Challenge), is an annual video-recognition artificial intelligence competition hosted by researchers at UC Berkeley University in the U.S. sponsored by NVIDIA, whose main goal is to be capable of viewing video clips from movies and create natural language sentences that describe it. This year, there was an evaluation of the ability of algorithms to recognize and distinguish characters in movies to generate accurate sentences including characters' IDs. This is one of the essential artificial intelligence functions that allows artificial intelligence of machines to understand the videos that they see and to recognize the main characters of the videos like humans do in order to naturally explain the successive situations as multiple sentences.

They entered the competition for the third time this year, winning the first prize over Universities like UC Berkeley and Oxford University in all three categories: "Multi-Sentence Description", "Fill-in the Characters", and "Multi-Sentence Description with Characters", and won the NVIDIAU GPU worth 3,000 USD.

Furthermore, they also participated in the Fashion IQ Challenge, a natural language-to-talk based artificial intelligence fashion recommendation competition sponsored by IBM Research, finishing in second place with merely a 1% difference with the winning Samsung Research America Team, and received a prize of 1,000 USD.

The goal of the Fashion IQ Challenge is to evaluate the functional performance of algorithms that suggest the most appropriate clothes to its user through conversing in natural language and incorporating the changes or modifications suggested by the user. That is, when a white dress is presented to a user, if the user suggests "Add a belt to the waist", the algorithm should be able to search for a picture of a white dress with a belt added to the waist.

Meanwhile, the RippleAI - SNU Team is conducting a demonstration with Hyundai Motor Co. during the period of the academic conference (October 29~November 1) at the Coex where ICCV 2019 is taking place. It is an opportunity to experience the excellent skills of the RippleAI system which understands videos and talks in natural language through explanations and demonstrations by researchers.
