‘Service· Industry-Univerrsity Cooperation’ is actively reflected in the professor evaluations in SNU Graduate School of Engineering Practice
-Purpose of departing from research and education-oriented evaluation

On September 4^th, the Seoul National University Graduate School of Engineering Practice (GSEP, dean Cha Kook-heon) announced that it has decided to reflect the achievements of voluntary service and industry-university cooperation activities in the professor evaluations.
 
GSEP has prepaed the ‘bylaws for criteria for the professor evaluations of GSEP’ and will apply from this semester.
 
According to the bylaws, volunteer activity score reflects 25%, industry-university cooperation reflects 20%, education score reflects 30% and the research score reflects 25%.
 
It is very unusual to reflect the service & industry-university cooperation score as half of the evaluation because the evaluation is used as a basis for performance-based payments.
 
Ahn Sung-Hoon, vice dean, explained, “Due to the nature of GSEP, it is difficult to judge the competencies and qualities as a professor by only lectures and dissertation, and networking ability is important in industry and education field.” And that “in the meantime, the evaluation of volunteer activities has often been limited to the formal level, but we will give marks to professors with more social contributions through qualitative evaluation.”
 
GSEP plans to evaluate the industry-university cooperation score in consideration of the accomplishments of industrial tasks, technology transfer and patent application. It’s policy is to carry out the volunteer activity score more practically also.
 
SNU GSEP was established was established last year for the first time in Korea with the goal of cultivating technical talents needed for industrial field. It’s recruitment subject is those with over 3 years of work experience, and master’s degree in engineering is awarded without having to write a thesis when the student completes a project.
