SNU College of Engineering (Dean Cha Kook-Heon) announces that Professor Yoon Sungroh of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Professor Hwang Jun Seok of the Department of Industrial Engineering have been nominated as the recipients of the SNU Excellence in Teaching Award. Their passion and creative approach to teaching have enhanced the quality of education and this has prized them with the award. The award ceremony was held at the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) from 3:30 PM on May 1st.
The SNU Excellence in Teaching Award is given to professors that have served the school for 5 years or above, developed intensive higher-level lecture courses or creative teaching methods, and borne exceptional passion in student guidance to be influential to other professors and students.
Professor Yoon has opened seven courses on the Fourth Industrial Revolution including lectures on artificial intelligence, deep learning, and machine learning to provide systematic and effective education on latest technologies. He has integrated a newly-developed attendance system based on artificial intelligence into his classes and has also strived to provide courses that are well-balanced between theory and practice. Yoon has already been awarded by his department numerous times for being an excellent teacher.
Professor Hwang has run his courses in English. His classes are also run in a forum format that prompts students to actively participate. By assigning group projects and conducting monthly seminar, Hwang has allowed his classes to be effective and enriching for both Korean and non-Korean students.
In addition, through the International IT Policy Program (ITPP), Professor Hwang has hosted the Green, Smart, Development and Vision (GSDV) Conference annually to allow continuous research, cooperation, and cross-cultural interaction between Korean and non-Korean students and alumni. Since 2003, the ITPP has produced 100 non-Korean alumni (45 masters and 55 doctors) and 73 Korean alumni (55 masters, 10 doctors, 8 combined masters and doctors). Recently, he has also worked as the supervisor for SNU Institute for Global Social Responsibility to greatly contribute to the internationalization of SNU’s education.
