Donates High Performance Computers to Cultivate Talent and Develop Leaders for the Fourth Industrial Revolution

SNU College of Engineering (Dean Cha Kook-Heon) announces that Emeritus Professor Hahn Song-Yop of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has donated 20 computers that are to be used during the practice classes of a course developed to rear talented individuals for the coming Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Although the 2016 Davos Forum (a.k.a. the World Economic Forum) has already declared the start of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, there are yet no detailed programs in Korean universities that are aimed to prepare and foster students to become competent Fourth Industrial Revolution workforce. SNU College of Engineering has been conducting numerous researches to develop Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, but no corresponding changes have occurred to the undergraduate curriculum.
It is Emeritus Professor Hahn Song-Yop that has suggested the College of Engineering to open up a course on technologies related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. As a result, a development committee consisting of 10 professors that are leading authorities in IoT, AI, and Big Data has formed to design the “Introduction to IoT, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Practice (IAB)” course.
Assignments and practice classes of the “IAB” requires high-performance computers. Professor Hahn, upon hearing the lack of high-performance computers for the course, has purchased 20 computers to donate to the College of Engineering.
The Donation Ceremony and Demonstration was hosted at the College of Engineering’s computer lab located at the third floor of building 44-1. Kim Si-Won, a student of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, who has participated at the event states, “If it weren’t for the computers donated by Professor Hahn, we would have faced numerous difficulties when completing the assignments for this course.” He sincerely thanks Professor Hahn by stating, “I will strive to earn a high score on my final project using this donated server.”
Another student, Lee Jong-hyun also addresses his gratitude to Professor Hahn who participated at the ceremony saying, “Doing assignments on my personal laptop slowed my laptop to even disrupt my other studies. However, with these new computers, outcomes can be quickly processed.”
Professor Hahn responds, “I am pleased to able to provide support to students. It is my wish for SNU to cultivate talented and creative individuals that are prepared for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and can lead our country in the fields of IoT, AI, Big Data, etc.”
This “IAB” course implements a team teaching method, which involves 8 SNU College of Engineering professors. It is targeted for the juniors and seniors of College of Engineering, but the course is also opened to all other students as well. This course is mainly intended for students that are not majoring in electrical engineering and computer engineering and is expected to become the cornerstone to integrate Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies to variety of different, seemingly unrelated fields. SNU College of Engineering plans to also open up courses on block chain and cybersecurity as follow-ups to the “IAB”.
