Doctor Yoon Heonjun of Professor Youn Byeng Dong’s Research Team Receives ACSMO 2018 Young Scientist Award

Doctor Yoon Heonjun of the Laboratory for System Health and Risk Management (Director and Professor Youn Byeng Dong) of SNU Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has been nominated as the recipient of the Young Scientist Award at the “Asian Congress of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (ACSMO) 2018” held from May 21^st to 24^th in Dalian, China. The final recipient has been selected after the presentations of participants who have passed the preliminaries that occurred prior to the event. The selection involved an extensive examination over the originality and excellence of the contents of the submitted research papers.
 
Piezoelectric energy harvesting is a technique that converts the excess oscillatory mechanical energy into electrical by using the piezoelectric effect, which exhibits potential difference in response to an applied mechanical stress. Taking note of the high correlation between the elastic modulus and ductility coefficient of a thin piezoelectric conductor with a transverse isotropy and the Laplacian displacement field, Yoon has demonstrated in his presentation an increase in the harvestable electricity when a thin piezoelectric conductor is attached to an expanding metamaterial with negative Poisson’s ratio (PR). Furthermore, Yoon has been acknowledged for suggesting an algorithm for constructing an optimal design that is strong against spatial irregularity in expanding metamaterials and can also maximize the piezoelectric energy harvesting.
