SNU Distinguished College of Engineering Professor Awards Go to Professors Choi Jaepil, Seo Il Won, and Kwon Dongil

SNU has nominated Professor Choi Jaepil of the Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering (Education Award), Professor Seo Il Won of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (Scholarship Award), and Professor Kwon Dongil of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (Cooperation Award) as 2018 Distinguished College of Engineering Professors. The award ceremony was held at the SNU Engineering House at noon on May 30th.
The “Distinguished College of Engineering Professor Award,” established in July of 1992 and funded by the 15th alumni of the College of Engineering, is given to SNU College of Engineer professors to boost their research activities and thus advance Korea’s industrial technologies. The Education Award is awarded to a professor who has devoted to providing creative and challenging education. The Scholarship Award is given to a professor who has an outstanding scholarly achievements. Finally, the Cooperation Award is given to professor who has contributed to development of industrial technologies through university-industry collaboration.
The recipient of the Education Award, Professor Choi Jaepil of the Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering, has joined SNU as assistant professor in September of 1998 to perform numerous researches on architectural planning and design and educate students. He has raised 17 doctors and 57 masters. Since 2003, Choi has worked as the head of the Division of Planning under the Office of Planning and Coordination of SNU and now is serving as the commissioner of the campus committee and the head of the Siheung Campus Promotion Committee. He has dedicated to improving the research and educational environment of SNU.
In addition, in 2002, Professor Choi has implemented the Bachelor of Architecture 5-year program to SNU. This has served as the platform for SNU Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering ranking 19th place on 2015 QS World University Rankings for Architecture. Choi has also received the 2010 Minister of Education, Science, and Technology Commendation and 2013 Minister of Education Commendation for exporting Korean architectural education.
The recipient of the Scholarship Award, Professor Seo Il Won has served at SNU Department of Civil Engineering since February of 1992 to conduct active educational and academic activities in the field of water resources. From December of 2011 to June of 2017, Seo has led the “Advanced Research Center for River Operation and Management” of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to promote international exchange with foreign researchers on water resources.
While accomplishing numerous national policy research tasks, Professor Seo has published over 160 research papers on various Korean and international academic journals while accomplishing to receive the 2012 Best Paper Award of the International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research. His recent publishment in 2018 on water quality analysis and modeling of rivers in the “Advances in Water Resources” journal has a high citation index, which indicates the success of the research.
The recipient of the Cooperation Award, Professor Kwon Dongil has joined the SNU Department of Materials Science and Engineering as an assistant professor in August of 1994 to carry out intensive researches on structural materials and reliability. With the support of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in 2010, he has successfully established the Center for Multi-scale Testing and Assessment at Combined Environment to invigorate R&D support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and provide engineering consulting on R&D technology.
Professor Kwon has also held the post of the director of the Research Institute of Advanced Materials to stimulate university-industry collaborations with LG Display, LS-Nikko, POSCO, etc. His entrepreneurial and research activities based on the measurement technology for mechanical properties developed at his lab have been published as technical report of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). In last December, Kwon has also developed a measurement technology to be registered on the code case of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
