SNU College of Engineering (Dean Cha Kook-Heon) states on 5th that Professor Jeong Yoonchan of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has been nominated as an OSA (The Optical Society) Fellow.
Professor Jeong is the first in world to develop a kilowatt (kW) single mode fiber laser and has also uncovered the probabilistic photomechanical phenomenon of quasi mode-locking fiber lasers. Hence, for his distinguished achievements related to fiber lasers, Jeong has earned the title of OSA Fellow.
Additionally, Jeong has also served as the associate editor of the Optics Express, a prestigious journal in the field of optics, for six years. He has filled the post as a committee member of several OSA sub-congresses including “Advanced Solid-State Lasers” and “Fiber Lasers VI” in the past and is currently the subcommittee chair of the “Laser Based Sensors” committee of OSA’s optical sensors meeting.
Established in 1916, the Optical Society is the most distinguished international society in the field of optics and photoelectron. Currently it has over 20,000 members around the world, including 34 members who have won the Nobel Prize in Physics, Chemistry, and Physiology or Medicine since its founding. The OSA Fellow is a membership limited to approximately 0.5% of current membership total, which is designated to members with distinguished accomplishments.
