SNU College of Engineering (Dean Cha Kook-Heon) has hosted the International Conference on Energy and Sustainability (ICES) with the SNU-Tanzania Innovative Technology and Energy Center (iTEC) from October 17th to 19th. The iTEC is operated by the SNU Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NM-AIST).
Over 230 participants from 8 countries have joined the event which has been saturated with presentations by numerous speakers. The opening ceremony has been sparked with a stress on the importance of appropriate technology to Korea and developing countries by the SNU Vice President for Research, Shin Hee Young, and Director of National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF)’s Center for International Affairs, Shin Suk Kyung.
After the keynote addresses of Dr. Karoli Njau, the former vice chancellor of NM-AIST, and Dr. Shiferaw Feyissa, the vice president of Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU) in Ethiopia, heated debates on the research and application of energy, sustainability, climate change, water, robot, AI, appropriate technology, education and many more have commenced.
Professor Yoon Jeyong (Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering) who is the co-president of the Academic Society for Appropriate Technology accentuates in his speech that “effective appropriate technology is helpful to not only developing countries but also Korea.”
Professor Ahn Sung-Hoon (Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) who is in charge of this event and the iTEC explains the purpose of this meeting stating, “Sustainable development is challenging with only the knowledge on a single area; therefore, the sharing and cooperation between experts of various fields from developing countries and developed countries are required.”
Professor Shin Gwy-Am of Ajou University who is also the director of Ethiopia iTEC comments, “This is rare event in Korea that gathers science and technology ODA professionals to debate on African regions that have not yet constructed a sturdy network. It is definitely going to help construct Korean connections in Africa and foster lively international cooperation.”
The ICES 2018 academic forum is a part of the ODA project of the Ministry of Science and ICT and NRF. The event has been co-hosted by SNU-Tanzania iTEC, Academic Society for Appropriate Technology, E3 Empower, NM-AIST, and SNU Institute of Advanced Machines and Design.
