SNU College of Engineering’s Rainwater Research Center (headed by Professor Moo Young Han) held an agreement ceremony with SUMMIT237 and Vanuatu to provide ‘Rainwater for Drinking’ systems for clean water use on February 12th.

The ceremony invited President Tallis Obed Moses, Professor Han, and Board President Ryul of SUMMIT237 to the SNU Faculty Club. CEO Seung Hwan Yu of Flexicurity, a social venture participating as project coordinating organization, served as the host of the ceremony.

Vanuatu is a Pacific island country with rich fisheries and oceans resources. However, the lack of water supply to majority of the country’s territory have led to poor sanitation and high disease prevalence.

Hence, the SNU Rainwater Research Center agreed to install and manage rainwater purifiers and filters for kindergartens and local facilities of Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, within this March. The plan is to expand the installation to other districts and islands of the Vanuatu through long term cooperation with the Vanuatu government and other participating organizations.

Professor Han stated, “I am glad that this agreement can help the local communities and national development of Vanuatu. I will strive to resolve the low supply of drinking water and sanitation problems of Vanuatu through rainwater systems.”

President of Vanuatu Tallis Obed Moses stated, “With the help of the SNU Rainwater Research Center, a productive innovation to improve the quality of life in Vanuatu has been started. Our government will proactively cooperate to bring on more changes.”

This agreement was led by SNU Professor Moo Young Han. Professor Han is also the head of SNU Rainwater Research Center. He has strived to solve water problems around the world and is currently operating the Water and Hygiene Technology Center to resolve the issue of SDG6.
