SNU Department of Computer Science and Engineering Professor Gunhee Kim’s Lab Chosen as the 2019 SW Star Lab by Ministry of Science and ICT

SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced on 22^nd that the Vision & Learning lab of Professor Gunhee Kim (SNU Department of Computer Science and Engineering) was nominated as the 2019 SW Star Lab by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
 
SW Star Lab is a support plan of the ministry to secure fundamental technologies relating to the 5 strategic planning software (including Big Data and Database, intelligent software, distributed computing, and user interface) and train masters/doctors-level software experts that will lead the global software competitiveness.
 
The Ministry of Science and ICT selected 10 SW Star Labs in 2015 and the number accumulated to 29 labs that are currently operating under the name of SW Star Lab. So far, the program has produced a total 163 SW professionals including 97 masters and 46 doctors. This year, 32 labs applied for SW Star Lab, yielding a high competition rate of 4.5 to 1.
 
Professor Kim’s lab, one of the labs that succeeded in earning the title, produced a total of 9 research papers that were presented at prestigious academic societies and published on journals. The lab has already published 5 researches this year and is being highly praised for its outstanding research outcomes on computer vision, natural language processing, and machine learning.
 
Professor Kim stated, “Through this nomination as SW Star Lab, we aim to attempt technology transfers to startups and commercialization of artificial intelligence in communication. Artificial intelligence can be applied to communication with users online in items including personalized advertisements, commercials, education, information delivery, etc.”
