SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced on December 4 that the College of Engineering (under)graduate research team consisting of Yu-Ki Lee and three other researchers of the SNU X-Corps, which is operated with the support of the field customized science and engineering talent development project, received the Ministry of Science and ICT Minister Award at 『The 4th 2020 X-Corps Festival』 that was organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Research Foundation.

"Team SF," founded by four members - Ph.D. student Yu-Ki Lee, M.S. student Jaeyoung Choi and 4th year students Hyunwoo Lee and Minseok Moon of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering - was honored with the greatest award at 『The 4th 2020 X-Corps Festival』 for their work on 'A new form factor's next-generation stretchable display and lighting using auxetic structures'. The event was held at Kintex on December 4 and was broadcasted live on the X-Corps festival homepage as well as on YouTube.

『The 4th 2020 X-Corps Festival』, supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Research Foundation, is a competition that shares and awards the achievements of research teams participating in the "field customized science and engineering talent development project" and has 760 science and engineering research teams from 25 universities undergo preliminary and final rounds before being selected as the single-most outstanding team.

Based on an understanding of the material's deformation behavior, "Team SF" designed the auxetic structure* and worked on a project to develop a new stretchable frame in which the aspect ratio of the screen is maintained. By thinking beyond the conventional geometry of material processing, a study was conducted to present a stretchable display that can be reliably attached to various curved surfaces.

"Team SF, the winner of the best prize at the 2020 Seoul National University X-Corps Competition (final presentation) within the university has also demonstrated their excellence within Korea by being awardees of the Ministry of Science and ICT's Minister Award," said Professor Eun Suk Suh of the Graduate School of Engineering Practice. "As in this case, the SNU X-Corp's research teams, which are conducted annually with the support of the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Research Foundation, are also producing excellent results every year at national competitions," he added.

The SNU X-Corps was selected for the field customized science and engineering talent development project in 2017 and every year, recruits around 20 research teams consisting of full-time teachers, industry experts, heads of science and engineering universities and team members to improve problem-solving skills, support employment, start-ups etc. Even in 2021, about 20 multidisciplinary teams will be recruited and selected to continue to creatively solve problems and continue research in the engineering field for a year.
