SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced on January 6 that Youngjun Choi's team of the Graduate School of Engineering Practice received the Encouragement Award at the 'Satellite Information Utilizing Space Hackathon' Idea Contest that was organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT and co-hosted by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute and the Korea Association for Space Technology Promotion.

"Satellite Information Utilizing Space Hackathon" began in August with the purpose of expanding the domestic market for satellite information services, induce private interest of private citizens and discover new service models based on satellite information. After preliminary rounds and coaching programs, the final competition was held in October and the award ceremony was delayed due to the outbreak of COVID-19, with the listings delivered to the winners on December 29.

M.S. student Youngjun Choi of the Graduate School of Engineering Practice formed the 'SNU-Satellite Team' with 4th year student Daeuk Kim of the College of Engineering Department of Mechanical Engineering, 3rd year student Jaewon Kim of the Department of Aerospace Engineering and engineering researcher Jung-Hyun Park and suggested 'The Management and Supervision System of Local River Embankment Using GPS and Satellite Image Data', earning them the honor of receiving their award.

Youngjun Choi, the team leader, is currently working as Deputy Director of the Korea Water Resources Development Corporation and is researching 'The effective safety management method for aging dam facilities' under the guidance of Professor Young-Oh Kim of the College of Engineering Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The global market for satellite information services continues to grow along with the flow of "New Space" that has private citizens leading space development. The contest was fiercely competitive with new and fresh ideas as it was possible to propose ideas for virtual satellite information-based services as well as actual satellite information-based services such as multi-purpose practical satellites.

"I am more than happy to have participated in the Space Hackathon and have the teamwork of my engineering members being recognized for their achievements. It has been a great opportunity to develop one's interests in satellite utilization services and we will try our best to extent the proposed ideas into the real field," said Youngjun Choi during his acceptance speech.

The SNU Graduate School of Engineering Practice opened in March 2016 to train field engineering leaders with multidisciplinary capabilities. The department is providing education for professional information about engineering so that engineers can develop complex problem-solving skills in industrial sites.
