Juheon Yi, a Ph.D. student of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (Advisor: Professor Youngki Lee) was selected to receive the Microsoft Research Asia Ph.D. Fellowship 2020 in recognition of his research on mobile deep learning systems for mixed reality. "I'm proud to be recognized by Microsoft for the value of my research. With this award, I hope to carry on the momentum and work harder to achieve my research goals," said Juheon Yi.
Juheon Yi is studying mobile deep learning systems for applications in mixed reality at the Human-Centered Computer Systems Lab. For immersive MR applications, multiple deep neural networks (DNNs) and rendering operations must be performed simultaneously on resource-limited mobile devices. Juheon Yi is conducting a study that innovatively improves existing mobile deep learning platforms focused on single DNN computation, and published two papers as the first author in ACM MobiCom 2020, a top international conference in the field of mobile computing. For an Asian research institute, his is the only case to have reached such achievements in the past decade.
In particular, this year's award for Juheon Yi is meaningful in that it has been over a generation since his advisor, Professor Youngki Lee of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, was selected as the receiver in 2006. "I am proud that the student that I have taught and mentored has received the fellowship that I had received. Through such a celebratory event, I look forward to further developing our partnership with Microsoft Research Asia," said Professor Youngki Lee.
Meanwhile, a total of 106 applicants from 36 leading research-focused universities across Asia Pacific apply for the Microsoft Research Asia Ph.D. Fellowship 2020, with only a total of 12 students being selected to receive the award.
