Seoul National University's College of Engineering (Dean Byoungho Lee) announced that Professor Seokwon Jeon of the Department of Energy Resources Engineering was elected as the next chairman at the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM) Council that was held on November 17.
 
A total of three candidates ran for this election and competed fiercely, and a secret vote was held by representatives from 53 countries.
 
Professor Seokwon Jeon was the first Korea to be elected, and his term of office is for four years, starting from the year 2023.
 
The International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering was founded in 1962 and with its headquarters located in Lisbon, it is the most prestigious society in the fields of rock mechanics and rock engineering.
 
It deals with key technologies necessary for standard rock testing, underground space and energy resource development and currently, 59 member countries are participating.
 
Meanwhile, Professor Seokwon Jeon served as Chairman of the Korean Society For Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering and as Vice Chairman of the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering.
