SNU College of Engineering and Graduate School of Engineering Practice (Dean and Director Kookheon Char) announced on January 28 that there will be a ceremony to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with 'Art Center Navi', an art museum specializing in media art in Korea, for cooperation in the research for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cultural Arts convergence.

The signing ceremony will be held on January 28 (Tuesday), 2 p.m. at the Dean's reception room at SNU College of Engineering.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of its opening this year, Art Center Nabi is the only digital art institution in Korea that has been in operation since 2000. As an expanded form of art, it holds critical views on cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics and blockchain and is building a community for creating and sharing art that incorporates them.

The details of the work agreement include ▲ support for hosting  creative, technological and presentation competitions related to all sectors of society such as the Humanities, the Arts and Social Studies, ▲ cooperation with experts of diverse fields to develop and educate on joint lectures, ▲ create and support research environments for research or projects that combines art with technology, ▲ hold academic competitions that share research contents of experts in various fields and ▲ supporting exhibitions for creative works in the fields of creative convergence.

"From the MOU with Art Center Nabi, focusing on artificial intelligence technology, we will conduct multi-disciplinary research encompassing culture, art, science, technology, society and education," said SNU and explained that "from the convergence of the sheer potential from technology and the sensitive artistic touch from the Arts, we aim to pave the path for the promotion of positive changes for humanity and our society."

The multi-disciplinary research centered on artificial intelligence technology began in last year June with the "Poet Chatbot" project by Professor Seong-Woo Kim's Team of SNU autonomous robot intelligence. Researchers from various majors have gathered to conduct research on the Poet Chatbot's technology that is equipped with artificial intelligence ranging from natural language processing and voice processing technology to research on robot hardware design, aiming to add artistic sensibility and wit of poets.

The Center for Human and Artificial Intelligence Research Center, which is scheduled to be established through the MOU, is a cultural and artistic research platform that is a reflection of the human and technological society. Through this project, various creators, including experts, researchers, developers, planners, designers, and writers from various fields at home and abroad, and researchers from SNU College of Engineering will carry out a convergence project using artificial intelligence. The results are planned to be presented in the form of academic competitions, exhibitions, performances, showcases, etc.

"Starting with this work agreement, we are going to carry out a challenging research project that will bring about transformation in the humanities, social studies and education through the integration of cultural, artistic and scientific technologies," said SNU. "Through this, we will pursue the truth that everything is connected to everything else that is represented in Nam June Paik's artwork of 'Mu Bong Tab'".
