SNU Professor Ho-Young Kim Wins Gordon Research Conference Robotics Best Poster Award

International Conference with robotics scholars participanting from around the world

Professor Ho-Young Kim of SNU, Ph.D Student Beomjune Shin, M.S Student Moonkyeong Choi

SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced on the January 31 that the team led by Professor Ho-Young Kim of the Department of Mechanical Engineering won the Best Poster Award at the Gordon Research Conference Robotics 2020. The event was held in Ventura, California, from 12~17 January.

The Gordon Research Conference is an international academic conference that was held since 1931, covering more than 200 different areas within the scientific industry. The field of Robotics has been held for the first time this year due to the dramatic increase in interest for soft robots that has occurred recently.

The conference brought together researchers from various majors, including machinery, electronics, chemistry, materials and physics, from around the world. The screening for the poster presentation included scholars in the robotics field from around the world including Guang-Zhong Yang, a professor at Imperial College London and editor-in-chief of the global journal Science Robotics, Bradley J. Nelson at ETH Zürich in Switzerland, and Paolo Dario, a professor at Sant'Anna, School of Advanced Studies,
Italy.

Professor Ho-Young Kim and his team released a paper titled "Self-locomotive Soft Activation Systems Powered by Environmental Humidity," in which Ph.D Student Beomjune Shin was titled the first author at the event. The researchers imitated the movement of plants to create actuators that move with moisture as an energy source and used them to implement various soft mechanical systems. They also proposed an optimized design based on the theoretical interpretation of this.

SNU Professor Ho-Young Kim said, "The research, which was drawn from plants, suggested a new possibility for soft robots," and added that, "By receiving the Gordon Research Conference Award, our research has been given the opportunity to receive global attention."

The study was conducted as part of the "Metamophing Machine System Research Group" that is supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea.
