The Machine Learning laboratory, led by Professor Hyun Oh Song, was selected as the final "2020 Software Star Lab" by the Ministry of Science and ICT. Professor Hyun Oh Song's research team will conduct research on "development of learning intelligence based on independently sustainable and reliable machine learning technology" with support from SW Star Lab's project.
2. Specific details about their achievements
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the May 22 that seven research labs were selected for "2020 Software Star Lab." A total of seven laboratories from four universities - Seoul National University, Korea University, Soongsil University and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology - were named.
SW Star Lab is a business that supports the development of master's and doctorate-level software talent that will lead software innovation along with securing basic and original technologies in five major software technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, cloud, application SW, and algorithms. So far, it has produced 234 top-notch personnel, including 141 master's degrees and 69 PhDs.
A total of 36 laboratories, including 10 in 2015, have been selected and operated through an open SW method. A total of 42 laboratories applied for SW Star Lab this year, recording a 6:1 competition rate, higher than the previous year's 4.5:1.
It plants to achieve two goals: securing original technology and fostering human resources by making it mandatory to have long-term support of up to eight years (4+4 years) for basic and original SW technology research as well as a participation rate of all participants, including master and doctorate researchers, at 40% or more.
"In a time of digital transformation where the importance of software is emphasized, securing basic software x original technology will be the basis for convergence and innovation," said Kyung Hee Song, the software policy officer at the Ministry of Science and ICT. "The government will actively support Software Star Labs to play a key role in achieving global results and fostering outstanding R&D talent."
Professor Hyun Oh Song's research team will conduct research on "development of learning intelligence based on independently sustainable and reliable machine learning technology" based on the support of SW Star Lab tasks. Specifically, it develops practically applicable learning intelligence that is adaptable to distortions, malicious attacks, and information bias that occur in the actual operation of machine learning technology, and that actively interacts with users and allows user optimization. It is expected that research results will be applied to various fields such as autonomous driving, security, education, and mobile AI.
