SNU College of Engineering Professor U Kang Won the PAKDD Best Research Paper Award

Provided 77% more accurate news recommendation techniques

SNU College of Engineering announced on the June 2 that a research team led by Professor U Kang of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (M.S Student Bonhun Koo , Ph.D. student Hyunsik Jeon) won the Best Student Paper award at PAKDD 2020 (Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining ), an international association for data mining.
 
At this year's 24th PAKDD Society, 135 papers out of a total of 628 submissions were selected (publishing rate: 21.5%), and among all these papers, only one won the Best Student Paper Award. Professor Kang's selected paper is a study of "Accurate News Recommendation Coalescing Personal and Global Temporary Preferences," which integrates personal and global time environment settings.
 
News-recommendation services are widely used in IT services as an important technology to enhance user satisfaction by providing optimized news for users among numerous news sources. The researchers suggested how to make accurate news recommendations to users by considering both public and personal preferences.
 
"This study recorded up to 77% improvement in accuracy compared to the previous research," said Professor U Kang of SNU. "The technology proposed in this paper will greatly improve the performance of news recommendation services widely used in IT services," he added.
