On June 12, SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) selected 10 SNU Haedong junior startup companies and held an award ceremony, awarding a total of 75 million won for supporting their businesses.

SNU College of Engineering and the Haedong Science and Culture Foundation held an agreement ceremony regarding "SNU Haedong Junior Support Program" in July 2019 to promote entrepreneurship activities. Through the agreement, the Haedong Science and Culture Foundation has donated 200 million won every year, and SNU College of Engineering has been conducting a "SNU Haedong Junior Support Program" to foster global startups.

For this purpose, 18 companies (preparatory) for start-ups were selected and more than 100 start-up and technology mentoring sessions were conducted from October last year. By moving into the Business Incubator Center, there was also the execution of four stages of 'Haedong Junior Excavation and Promotion Program' for approximately four months, including the government's preliminary start-up package support project, participation in professional start-up programs, and investment attraction. From the (preliminary) start-up companies that survived the program, the final 10 were selected through screening by initial venture capital investors (VCs).

Unlike a general start-up competition in which outstanding companies are selected and awarded, the program helps to discover and allow the growth of an early (preparatory) start-up team with potential and passion, and awards business support based on four months of activity and growth results.

Although the program was once in crisis due to the COVID-19 incident that spread in the first half of 2020, SNU swiftly switched to a "non-face-to-face online mentoring system", shut down the Business Incubator Center, promoted the start-up teams to work from home and overall, ensured social distancing, allowing the program to be safely completed. The awards ceremony, which was held on June 12, was also held online.

Youngjae Kim, Board President of the Haedong Science and Culture Foundation, said, "It is very rewarding to see that the seed of the Haedong Idea Factory project, which began in 2016, has grown into a the fruitful tree of Haedong Junior Company and has become a promising start-up. We will continue to provide our endless support for companies to grow in the long term."

"Although there is a restrain on external activities with the outbreak of COVID-19, as the old saying of 'crisis is an opportunity,' this is the time where we need wisdom to prepare for the future," said Kookheon Char, Dean of SNU's College of Engineering. "I am very pleased that this program seems to be the starting point for the start-up hub that connects the scattered alumni of SNU."

Kisuk Kang, Head of the SNU Engineering Consulting Center, discussed future plans by saying, "In May, we recruited start-up teams that were willing take part in the second program to find that 56 teams, which was more than three times as many as the first time the program was conducted, had applied and we will actively utilize three start-up support platforms at SNU to support them and provide an additional 100 million won in business support funds."

The list of 10 (preparatory) start-up companies and representatives selected for the program and awarded with business support is as follows.

Nano In Co., Ltd. (Jae Hong Park)/ Ripple AI Co., Ltd. (Gunhee Kim)/ Ation Lab Co., Ltd. (Hobin Kim)/ (Preparation founder)Pushion Lab (Ryu Seung-jun)/ ArtEastic (Junmo Park) / The DASH Co., Ltd.
