Seoul National University's College of Technology (Dean Kookheon Char) announced on April 30 that Professor Byung-Gon Chun's "Clone Cloud" research of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering was selected as the most influential research published in the computer system field over the past decade, winning the 2021 European Conference on Computer Systems' "Test of Time Award".

EuroSys, the highest academic body in the field of computer systems in Europe, awards the Test of Time Award each year for one of the most influential systems research paper published ten years ago. The award ceremony was held online at the EuroSys 2021 conference around 6 p.m. on April 24 in Korean time. Professor Byung-Gon Chun had also been named the most influential paper of the decade by the American Computer Society SIGOPS in 2020, and was inducted into the ACM SIGOPS Hall of Fame.

This award-winning paper is a clone cloud study published by EuroSys in 2011. At that time, the research team proposed a system technology to speed up smartphone apps by performing smartphone clones in the cloud for the first time in the world. According to the academic search engine Google Scholar, the paper has been cited more than 2,300 times and is recognized by industry and academia for pioneering the field of mobile cloud computing. With this award, Professor Byung-Gon Chun has been recognized to have produced the most influential research in the world for the second consecutive year.

"I am happy and honored that I have been recognized for my ability to detect, research and develop future leading technologies. Recently, I have been researching and developing new language related artificial intelligence. To this end, we have established Friendly AI (friendli.ai) and will provide users with large-scale distributed learning of language such as GPT-3, which is considered the best natural language processing system," said Professor Byung-Gon Chun.
