SNU College of Engineering (Dean Cha Kook Heon) announces that Professor Yoon Sungroh (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) has been selected as the recipient of “This Month’s Scientist” award for August.
Professor Yoon has developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that can conduct precise analysis over sequential Big Data which interminably produces texts, nucleic acid sequences, sound, etc. His achievement has demonstrated a great range of implications into the fields of Big Data and AI, the two mainstreams of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Hence, as an acknowledgment of Yoon’s work, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea have nominated Yoon as the winner of August.
Nowadays, massive volume of sequential Big Data streams from an extensive range of areas including science, technology, Internet of Things (IoT), healthcare, smart factory, and FinTech. A challenge that naturally follows is the separation of noise from meaning in Big Data to obtain a condensed and saturated data set of efficiency.
Professor Yoon’s team responds to the issue by creating a new AI technology that learns vast range of data through various means based on Deep Learning and Machine Learning; for instance, Representation Learning and Interaction Learning for sequential Big Data and Transfer Learning for sequential, dynamic graphs. It is only after its acquisition of the knowledge of data that the technology is able to find consistencies and regularities inside the huge data pool.
Yoon states, “The new aim is to overcome the current AI and mechanical learning which restricts to specialized and intense learning for the carrying out of a single task. Our ambition is the construction of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) that conducts human tasks with minimal amount of learning.”
The individual nominated as “This Month’s Scientist” for his or her outstanding research achievements and contributions to the development of science and technology is prized with the Minister of Science and ICT Commendation along with 10M Korean Won.
