SNU College of Engineering (Dean Cha Kook-heon) states on 11th that from the 2nd semester of 2018 the College of Engineering will launch simultaneous video lectures with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).
So far, the College of Engineering has been operating simultaneous video lectures with the University of Hawaii, Penn State University, University of Tokyo (UToyko), etc. In the case of UTokyo, the two engineering colleges have signed a contract in 2009 and have been providing video lectures to partner schools for the past ten years. Starting from this year, this exchange of video lecturing will expand to HKUST.
The course will be taught in English. Students who enroll and fulfill the course requirements will earn credits for their completion of the course. As the coming 2nd semester is the first trial of this program, the schools will only operate one test course each. The plan is to gradually increase the number of courses.
Since the construction of bridges and underwater tunnels that span though Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China, Hong Kong has been stroke by a sudden construction “boom.” Naturally, students have gained a keen interest in architecture and environmental engineering. As a feedback to this spark of interest, the two colleges of engineering have decided to have the test courses be centered on that field.
HKUST’s test course, titled “Construction Materials and Lab,” will be taught by Professor Christopher Leung of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and is going to be mainly taken by SNU students of the Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. SNU Professor Thomas Kang is to manage the assignments and exams of these students who are enrolling in this remote course. The experiments, or any lab-related activities, will be conducted separately, but still keeping to the guidelines of HKUST.
SNU’s course “Computational Fluid Dynamics for Civil and Environmental Engineering” is to be delivered by Professor Nguyen Van Thinh of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The targeted guests of this course are HKUST students from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. HKUST Professor Kit Ming Lam has acceded to be in charge of organizing their assignments and exams.
Dean Cha Kook-heon states, “Universities in Hong Kong occupy high ranks on various college rankings and particularly HKUST have demonstrated immense advancement in engineering. Therefore, this course exchange with HKUST is not merely an exchange of engineering technology by a huge support to SNU’s globalization.”
