Research Team Led by Professor Dongil Kwon Publishes Their Residual Stress Measurement Technique on the Welding Handbook of American Welding Society

- Boasts the Superiority of Korean Measurement Technology

Professor Dongil Kwon of SNU Department of Materials Science and Engineering

SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced on 21st that an original measurement technique developed by the research team of Professor Dongil Kwon (Department of Materials Science and Engineering) had been introduced on the Welding Handbook of the American Welding Society (AWS).

The American Welding Society (AWS), established in 1919, has been publishing and updating its AWS Welding Handbook, a manual on the science and technology of welding. This handbook suggests several authorized test methods for residual stress, one of the major causes of structural damage that harm structural health. The residual stress measurement technique by Professor Kwon’s team was selected to be published in the recent issue.

The research team proposed a technique that can quantitatively evaluate local residual stress of a surface using instrumented indentation technique. This technique can measure the residual stress from macroscale (welding) to nanoscale (thin film). In addition, it is the first measurement technique from Korea to be approved as Code Case of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC). This again demonstrates the superiority of the team’s technique.

Professor Kwon stated, “This new testing method is being acknowledged for being able to quantitatively evaluate residual stress on-site, including sites like power plants. Being published on the AWS Welding Handbook is a case that boasts the superiority of Korean measurement technique to the world.”
