SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced that Professor Thomas Kang of the Department of Architecture, who heads the Global Engineering Education Center, will hold online lectures on architectural concrete engineering for 12 weeks from April 28 at Cape Town University, the number 1 ranked university in South Africa.
"According to the world's most prestigious ACI Structural Journal, the concrete structural engineering field of SNU's College of Engineering has topped the list of contributions to the Clarivate Analytics paper for the second consecutive year," said SNU. "We plan to help the continent of African through online lectures as Cape Town University, which highly praised the excellence of international research, has proposed non-face-to-face education."
Originally, Cape Town University attempted to hold an intensive construction concrete course in the form of a short-term intensive seminar, but due to the current COVID-19 situation, has changed its direction to an online lecture. Based on Professor Thomas Kang's experience in running internationally joint online classes ofregular courses at the University of Hawaii, the University of Tokyo and Illinois State University, he has come to open regular courses for three credits online.
Professor Thomas Kang's construction concrete intensive lecture is well-known to be rare for covering the structural design and construction of pretension and post-tension. In addition, for this course, Professor Kang plans to add the contents of high-rise structural engineering as requested by Cape Town University.
The online and offline real-time international joint lectures, which Professor Kang has been in charge of, have been conducted using the high-tech lecture facilities of the SNU Global Engineering Education Center. The Global Engineering Education Center is an educational institution that leads 'internationalization', 'enhancement of technology literacy education' and 'the educational Korean Wave. Since 2010, joint lectures have been conducted through the interaction with the University of Tokyo , Mongolian University of Science and Technology, Pennsylvania State University, University of Hawaii and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Such an environment can create a global learning atmosphere where engineering students can study with foreign students even if they do not physically travel abroad as exchange students, while they can listen to lectures by professors from overseas universities. The Global Engineering Education Center recently completed the maintenance of nine classrooms equipped with hardware equipment based on the standard communication protocol (H.323) to facilitate non-face-to-face training required by the new COVID-19 outbreak.
"It is of significant importance that SNU's College of Engineering, which is showing to achieve excellent research results internationally has, through the COVID-19 incident, been given the opportunity to spread the Korean Wave in education to South Africa's number 1 University of Cape Town University," stated SNU Professor Thomas Kang. "We hope that the Global Engineering Education Center will create a place to interact online and broaden international horizons," he added.
