Jung-ho Kim, a student at SNU's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Won the First Prize in a Civil Society Student Paper Competition

SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced on June 22 that Jung-ho Kim, a Master's integration course student at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, won the first prize at an international student thesis competition hosted by the Probabilistic Method Committee of the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
The ASCE EMI Academic Conference is an international conference with the highest authority in the field of engineering mechanics, with about 1,000 presenters participating in approximately 150 sessions each year. The academic conference was postponed to 2021 due to the outbreak of COVID-19, but the student thesis competition was held as scheduled to train young researchers in related fields and encourage them to advance into academia. Of the total 22 student papers submitted, five finalists were selected through preliminary screening and the final two were awarded the first prize after an online presentation and evaluation of questions and answers.

Jungho Kim, a MS/Ph.D student at the Structure System Reliability Group (Professor Junho Song) of the SNU Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, who participated in the student thesis competition, presented his paper with the theme of "Reliability-Based Design Optimization Using Quantile Surrogates by Adaptive Gaussian Process" and won the first prize position. This paper proposed a high-tech theory that can achieve optimal design efficacy while accurately considering various uncertainties affecting complex engineering systems, such as urban infrastructures, and caught the judges' attention during the competition due to its commendable efficiency compared to the existing reliability-based optimal design method.
"It has truly been a meaningful experience to prove Seoul National University's international research competitiveness by participating in a competition with outstanding students from the world's leading universities. I thank Professor Song for his guidance," said Jungho Kim. "We would like to further develop the proposed reliability-based optimal design technology so that it can be applied to the reliability-based design of real urban infrastructure and complex engineering systems," he added.
