Professor Byung-Gon Chun's Research Work is the First in South Korea to Make it to the ACM SIGOPS Hall of Fame

Professor Byung-Gon Chun of the SNU Department of Computer Science and Engineering became the first Korean to be part of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) SIGOPS Hall of Fame this year.
ACM SIGOPS, a group of most prestigious researchers in the field of computer systems, annually awards the Hall of Fame award by selecting one or two of the most influential system research papers that was published 10 to 11 years ago. Previous papers that have won the position include the UNIX operating system and MapReduce, which deals with distributed data processing.
Professor Chun's work that made it to the Hall of Fame was published in 2010 at the Operating Systems Design and Implementation (OSDI) conference. At that time, the team proposed real-time tracking of the flow of one's personal information in smartphones, becoming the world's first technology to suggest personal information protection.
Further, through the use of the Taint-Droid system, it was revealed for the first time in the world that many mobile apps misuse personal information. According to Google Scholar, the paper has been cited more than 3,800 times and has led to many follow-up studies.
Professor Chun is currently researching and developing a new artificial intelligence platform. In particular, he is focusing on techniques such as GPT-3 that is capable of quick distributive learning as well as inference of super-large artificial intelligence models. At the Spotlight session of the world's best academic information processing systems (Neural Information Processing Systems) this December, he will introduce Nimble systems, which is up to 22 times faster than existing systems when conducting artificial intelligence learning and reasoning.
"I am beyond happy to receive the best award that one can receive as a system researcher. For the future, I plan to actively conduct research work related to artificial intelligence platforms and continue my contribution to related research and industries," said Professor Chun.
The award ceremony was held online by the OSDI 2020 conference at around 3 a.m. on November 6, Korean time.
