Seoul National University College of Engineering announced that it held an opening ceremony for its new student development support center, "Gong-In," on June 10 at Building 300 on SNU's Gwanak Campus.
Established with funding from the HYUNSONG Educational & Cultural Foundation, "Gong-In" is designed as a one-stop support space for students. It offers customized counseling from dedicated professional counselors and integrates a wide range of internal and external support programs to provide students with holistic support services.
The ceremony was attended by SNU President Honglim Ryu, College of Engineering Dean Young-oh Kim, Secretary-General Seong-cheol Oh of the HYUNSONG Foundation, Student President Jeongwoong Lee, and approximately 30 undergraduate students, along with other key stakeholders from within and outside the university.
In his congratulatory remarks, President Ryu stated, "SNU has continually created systems and spaces to help students develop core competencies for the future, such as communication, collaboration, and creative problem-solving—including the implementation of residential college programs and the SNU Commons. 'Gong-In,' which opens today, is expected to serve as a new turning point in that ongoing effort. I hope that this center becomes a platform where each student can maximize their potential and help drive meaningful change not just within SNU, but across society.“
Dean Young-oh Kim pledged strong support for the platform, saying, "The College will actively support the successful operation and growth of 'Gong-In' so that students can access robust extracurricular programs to develop essential competencies and take full advantage of these opportunities.“
Student President Jeongwoong Lee emphasized the symbolic importance of the center: "The opening of 'Gong-In' is not just about launching a new facility—it marks a declaration that the SNU College of Engineering is now paying close attention to the growth of each and every student. I hope this center becomes a compass for students as they design their lives and careers with agency, and I will do my best as student representative to align with this vision.“
Going forward, "Gong-In" will expand the environment in which students can grow and challenge themselves through three core functions:
First, its one-stop student support service will recommend tailored internal and external programs based on the specific needs of each student. Second, professional counselors will offer comprehensive guidance on major selection, career paths, and research—moving beyond the limits of department-based student services. Third, the center will systematically collect and analyze data on students' extracurricular activity patterns to inform more precise and effective policy development.
