Seoul National University College of Engineering announced that Ji-Eun Byun, who earned both her bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from SNU’s Department of Civil, Urban and Environmental Engineering, has been appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London as of May this year.

Professor Byun is also affiliated with the Centre for Transport Engineering and Modelling at Imperial College London, where she will conduct research on risk assessment and decision-making for large-scale transportation networks and infrastructure systems.

Byun completed her undergraduate studies and an integrated M.S./Ph.D. program (advised by Junho Song) at SNU’s Department of Civil, Urban and Environmental Engineering. She subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the EPICentre at University College London (UCL) and the Engineering Risk Analysis Group at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), where she was awarded a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. From 2022 to 2026, she served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Glasgow.

Her primary research areas include reliability and resilience assessment of infrastructure systems under uncertainty, as well as digital twin technologies. In particular, she has developed methodologies for rapidly quantifying risk and supporting decision-making in complex, interconnected systems—such as large-scale transportation networks, structures, and power grids—using Bayesian networks, systems engineering, artificial intelligence, and risk-based optimization techniques.

“Education at SNU and my experience conducting advanced research provided a strong foundation for me to grow as a researcher capable of addressing complex societal challenges from an engineering perspective,” Byun said. “At Imperial College, I aim to develop digital twin-based technologies that enable real-time understanding of risks in large-scale infrastructure systems and support reliable decision-making under various uncertainties.”
