SNU Prof. Jongho Lee Named ISMRM Fellow

Seoul National University College of Engineering announced that Professor Jongho Lee of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has been named a Fellow of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) at its 2026 Annual Meeting, held in Cape Town, South Africa, in the third week of May.

The ISMRM is the world’s leading academic society in the field of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with more than 8,500 experts worldwide. Each year, only about the top 0.2% of members with outstanding research achievements are selected as Fellows. With this recognition, Professor Lee becomes the only active Korean biomedical engineer to be named an ISMRM Fellow, further elevating the global standing of Korean biomedical engineering.

Professor Lee earned his bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University’s School of Electrical Engineering and his Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. He previously served as a researcher at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and as a professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania before joining Seoul National University in 2014. Since then, he has established himself as a leading international scholar through pioneering research in brain microstructure imaging. His research group is currently leading the development of next-generation imaging technologies in collaboration with globally renowned institutions, including Harvard Medical School, the Max Planck Society, and the Jülich Research Centre.

Professor Lee’s contributions are particularly notable for extending beyond academia into real-world clinical and industrial applications. A Parkinson’s disease diagnostic solution developed by his research team is currently being used in major tertiary hospitals in Korea, including Seoul National University Hospital, Samsung Medical Center, and Severance Hospital. In addition, AIRS Medical, a medical AI startup founded by his former students, has expanded into more than 1,500 hospitals across over 40 countries with its high-speed MRI reconstruction technology, SwiftMR. The company has recently seen a rapid increase in valuation and is approaching unicorn status.
