SNU Professor Chun Byung-Gon was selected as a member of Apache Software Foundation

SNU College of Engineering (Dean Lee Kun-woo) stated on 5th that Department of Computer Science and Engineering Professor Professor Chun Byung-Gon was selected as a member of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF).
The ASF is the world’s biggest open-source association which supports global open-source software. It has been selecting superior projects of high-quality software development based on technical maturity and society activity.
The ASF members are the highest grade that an ASF participant can rise, and have the right to vote for nine directors of the Foundation Steering Committee and have the right to run for the annual election of directors. In addition, they have the right to view internal data of ASF, to submit proposals to add new projects, to vote and to mentor.
Professor Chun is the chair of the open source project REEF, which was promoted to the Top Level Project (TLP) of 2015. He was named a member of the ASF acknowledged of his accomplishments; he co-developed REEF, a big data analysis meta framework, successfully led the TLP through the incubation process of ASF, and advised SNU students as an evangelist for open source activities.
Professor Chun said, "The fact that I was selected as an ASF member means that my activities in the Apache Software Foundation have been recognized by developers all over the world. As an ASF member, I will be interested in activating domestic open-source through continuous research. In fact, we plan to create an open source community for the results of research on Big Data Analysis System through Software Star Lab, which is supported by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning.”
