Spatial Informatics Engineering

ProfessorDr. Kim, Yongil, Dr. Yu, Kiyun

Geo-informatics is the study of the determination and measurement of specific areas of human activity. It examines not only the surface of earth, such as the topography, roads, and transportation facilities, but also the properties of underground objects such as water and sewage, electrical cables, common-use channels, as well as moving objects such as automobiles, aircraft, and satellites. The specialization of modern society is expanding the range of geo-information on a national scale. The amount of human geo-information has been rapidly increasing with the help of satellites, the Global Positioning System (GPS), and remote exploration techniques, all of which support the construction of thematic maps. The need for methods of efficiently collecting, processing, and analyzing geo-information increases continuously as these techniques are applied.

Transportation Engineering

ProfessorDr. Lee, Chungwon, Dr. Kim, Dong-Kyu, Dr. Yoon, Gyugeun

The field of traffic engineering and planning involves the efficient construction and management of traffic systems. Practitioners solve traffic problems caused by the increase in human activities due to a rapidly growing economy. Traffic has no purpose in itself but is used as a means of transit. For balanced development of the country and the expansion of indirect societal capital, its efficient arrangement and operation must be researched. Traffic defined in terms of transit covers land, sea, and air traffic. Continuous research is in progress in terms of engineering (the characteristics of roads, traffic, and human beings), planning (supplying facilities), and administrative (effective operation of facilities, establishment of traffic policies).

Structural & Construction Engineering

ProfessorDr. Kim, Ho-Kyung, Dr. Song, Junho, Dr. Moon, Juhyuk, Dr. Cho, Jae-Yeol, Dr. Chae, Yunbyeong

Structural engineering plays the leading role in designing the foundational facilities of society such as bridges, power plants, and dams. These structures are massive and have numerous users. Thus, their breakdown can result in great disasters. The purpose of structural engineering is to design secure structures that can withstand various conditions such as seismic load, wave pressure, automobile kinetics, gravity, and wind load. Moreover, the economic and aesthetic aspects of structures must be considered in their design. Construction management and integrated construction systems are becoming more important for the advancement of construction.

Urban Design & Planning

ProfessorDr. Kwon Young-Sang, Dr. Jung, Chang Mu, Dr. Park, Yoonmi

City planning is a special discipline that attempts to forecast all the various problems a city might face and develop solutions. It is a social process of presenting information and searching for policies to realize a desirable growth direction, spatial structure formation, functional composition, and physical environment for the city. That is, city planning covers a wide range of subjects from national boundaries to towns. It is a future-oriented field that examines a region’s problems and potentials and presents reasonable solutions based on efficiency and rationality. City design is closely related to construction and city landscaping; it focuses on planning the physical environment in order to create a more pleasant, functional, and beautiful habitat. Specifically, city design deals with environmental quality problems in terms of model theories and evaluates three-dimensional spatial plans, providing a link between structures and the city, whereas city planning handles various social indicators and uses measurement techniques.

Hydro-Engineering

ProfessorDr. Kim, Young-Oh, Dr. Hwang, Jin Hwan, Dr. Van Thinh Nguyen, Dr. Park, Yong Sung, Dr. Yang, Soo Hyun

The field of hydraulic engineering addresses problems related to water resources in terms of engineering science. The dynamics and quantitative movement of fluid and water, forecasts of water contamination in the environment, and the development of control technologies are investigated. Areas of study include hydraulics, hydrology, water resources engineering, and coastal engineering.

Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Engineering

ProfessorDr. Chung, Choong-Ki, Dr. Park, Junboum, Dr. Kim, Sung ryeol

Geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering deals with the theories required for scientific application of earth materials. It includes the understanding of soil dynamics, investigation of soil composition, the construction and maintenance of earthworks, and environmental pollution of the soil. That is, the emphasis is on theories and investigative methods used to understand the material characteristics of soil; its use in structural foundations, tunnels, slopes, dredging, and reclamation; the dynamics of breast walls; and the examination, prediction, purification, and prevention of pollution. In this field, the objective is to educate students to become specialists in business, government, schools, and research institutes. To achieve this purpose, various courses are available, and efficient teaching methods are used to provide comprehensive coverage of technically advanced content. The subjects of education and research include soil mechanics and soil engineering, rock engineering, soil environmental engineering, and pavement engineering. With access to the latest research and educational facilities, all students are provided with hands-on opportunities to experiment and practice. This field is closely related with other areas of study. In addition, the faculty participate in various academies and studies in civic and industrial contexts as consultants for government bodies and companies.

Environmental Engineering

ProfessorDr. Park, ju Young, Dr. Nam, Kyoungphile, Dr. Kim, Jae Young, Dr. Choi, Yongju, Dr. Choe, Jong Kwon

We face a change in attitude toward the environment worldwide and a demand that human beings and the environment be given equal consideration. The goal is to offer human beings a better habitat and ensure sustainable human development for future generations. The foremost field that contributes to environmentally sound and sustainable development is environmental engineering. Concern for the environment is evident in the Climate Convention and ISO 14000 (a standard for environmentally friendly business practices). As a result, an increase in human resources in this field is needed in order to ensure each country’s competitiveness and protect the environment. Environmental engineers develop and manage various technologies in order to provide human beings with a more secure and healthy habitat and to protect, manage, and purify the natural environment. In addition, the field considers the geological environment, the effects of geological events on humans, and the evaluation of environmental effects.
