Spatial Informatics Engineering

ProfessorYongil Kim and Kiyun Yu

Geo-informatics is the study of the determination and measurement of specific areas of human activity. It examines not only the surface of earth, such as the topography, roads, and transportation facilities, but also the properties of underground objects such as water and sewage, electrical cables, common-use channels, as well as moving objects such as automobiles, aircraft, and satellites. The specialization of modern society is expanding the range of geo-information on a national scale. The amount of human geo-information has been rapidly increasing with the help of satellites, the Global Positioning System (GPS), and remote exploration techniques, all of which support the construction of thematic maps. The need for methods of efficiently collecting, processing, and analyzing geo-information increases continuously as these techniques are applied.

Transportation Engineering

ProfessorDong-Kyu Kim, Gyueun Yoon, and Chungwon Lee

Travel is a means to overcome spatial limitations. Transportation, which embraces numberless travel, sparks trade and cultural exchange, making transportation an indispensable element of modern human civilization. Transportation engineering plans and establishes transportation systems required for passenger transport and logistics and develops policies and operations to respond to transportation-related problems triggered by changes in socioeconomic activities in our communities. It involves 1) transportation modes such as land, maritime, and air modes; 2) infrastructure such as roadways, railroads, ports, and airports; and 3) systems such as transit services and traffic management. Meanwhile, due to the advancement of information and communication technology, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) integrate all the elements to enhance the efficiency, safety, and convenience of transportation systems. Moreover, smart cities incorporate transportation to elevate the quality of life for urban residents, broadening the domain of transportation engineering that changes with the times.

Structural & Construction Engineering

ProfessorHeedong Goh, Ho-Kyung Kim, Juhyuk Moon, Junho Song, Jae-Yeol Cho, Dr. Yunbyeong Chae

Structural engineering plays a leading role in designing the social infrastructure such as bridges, powerplants, and dams. These structures are not only massive but also critical for maintaining everyday lifes of people. Thus, any damage or collapse of infrastructure will result in serious loss of people lives and properties. The purpose of structural engineering is to design infrastructures that can safely withstand various conditions such as seismic load, wave pressure, automobile kinetics, gravity, and wind load. Moreover, the economic and aesthetic aspects of structures must be considered in their engineering design of infrastructure. At the same time, technological convergence with green environmental technology such as low carbon structural materials is being required to reduce the carbon footprint of infrastructure and construct various energy-related structures.

Urban Design & Planning

ProfessorYoung-Sang Kwon, Yoonmi Park, Chang Mu Jung

The Urban Planning and Design (UPD) major is a dynamic and interdisciplinary field that tackles the pressing urban challenges. By anticipating societal needs and developing equitable and efficient solutions, UPD aims to create convenient, comfortable, and safe living environments, which requires a deep understanding of and collaboration with diverse fields such as geography, transportation, architecture, landscape architecture, real estate, humanities, and public administration. Urban Planning emphasizes strategic resource allocation and land management, crafting innovative policies and frameworks to enhance regional competitiveness, drive overseas urban development, prepare North Korean infrastructure development plan after reunification, and shape forward-thinking housing policies. Urban Design, on the other hand, specifically focuses on conceptualizing and creating vibrant, safe, and functional urban spaces. This includes designing ideal residential areas, spearheading urban regeneration projects, and developing new cities both domestically and internationally. In the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, UPD is at the forefront of integrating cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, computer vision, big data analysis, and AR/VR to revolutionize urban spaces and elevate the quality of life for citizens. Our research and practical applications strive to redefine the future of urban environments. Graduates from this major embark on diverse and influential careers, contributing to government and local research institutes, academia, private real estate development and finance companies, construction firms, design studios, international organizations, and leading IT development and service companies.

Hydro-Engineering

ProfessorVan Thinh Nguyen, Young-Oh Kim, Yong Sung Park, Soo Hyun Yang, Jin Hwan Hwang

Hydro-Engineering Laboratories conduct research on the dynamic mechanical properties of water, a vital element essential for the survival and prosperity of the Earth's ecosystem. In addition, we study various natural and human-built systems related to water. We are particularly interested in uncovering the complex interactions between water and its surrounding environments across diverse spatial and temporal scales. In this era of climate crisis, we undertake research aimed at understanding and solving complex water resource issues occurring in urban, river, and coastal areas closely linked to human life. Our research is expected to inform climate-resilient and sustainable approaches for managing riverine and coastal areas, which are increasingly facing extreme weather events and water-related disasters.

Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Engineering

ProfessorSung-Ryul Kim, Junboum Park, Choong-Ki Chung

Geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering deals with the theories required for scientific application of earth materials. It includes the understanding of soil dynamics, investigation of soil composition, the construction and maintenance of earthworks, and environmental pollution of the soil. That is, the emphasis is on theories and investigative methods used to understand the material characteristics of soil; its use in structural foundations, tunnels, slopes, dredging, and reclamation; the dynamics of breast walls; and the examination, prediction, purification, and prevention of pollution. In this field, the objective is to educate students to become specialists in business, government, schools, and research institutes. To achieve this purpose, various courses are available, and efficient teaching methods are used to provide comprehensive coverage of technically advanced content. The subjects of education and research include soil mechanics and soil engineering, rock engineering, soil environmental engineering, and pavement engineering. With access to the latest research and educational facilities, all students are provided with hands-on opportunities to experiment and practice. This field is closely related with other areas of study. In addition, the faculty participate in various academies and studies in civic and industrial contexts as consultants for government bodies and companies.

Environmental Engineering

ProfessorJong Kwon Choe, Jae Young Kim, Kyoungphile Nam, Park, Joo-Young, Yongju Choi

In response to global environmental changes, particularly the climate crisis, there is an urgent need for innovative solutions to sustain life within planetary boundaries. With the rise of the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) movement, non-financial factors such as environmental performance are significantly influencing corporate competitiveness. Strengthened carbon emission regulations under the Paris Agreement and the push for carbon neutrality are increasingly acting as trade barriers, impacting national competitiveness. Amidst these changes, the role of environmental engineering—focused on solutions for sustainable development—has become ever more critical. Our Environmental Engineering program is dedicated to developing a range of technologies aimed at ensuring healthy lives for both humans and nature, grounded in a scientific understanding of the interactions between social systems and the natural environment. Additionally, the program emphasizes an integrative understanding of the economic, social, and institutional factors essential for the effective implementation of technological and engineering solutions.
