Founded on July 1, 2009, the Global Education Center for Engineers aims to enhance national competitiveness by nurturing talents with research and practical capabilities at the international level. Under this goal, the center develops and operates global engineering programs, provides comprehensive infrastructure for education services, promotes international education and research exchanges, and offers industrial workforce training. Furthermore, the center is equipped with smart lecture halls, convention rooms, and amenities, establishing itself as the cutting-edge educational facility of the SNU College of Engineering.
The word “engineer” was originally derived from the Latin word “ingenium,” meaning “cleverness” or “ingenuity.” The role of an engineer is to create products and technologies that are essential in daily life based on scientific theories and with the application of ingenuity and cleverness. However, in today’s globalized and knowledge-based society, what is needed is not only ingenuity but also a creative mindset. A global engineer is someone who can lead various issues faced by humanity, such as the environment, energy, and food, with innovative thinking.
It is indeed true that the introduction of a new educational paradigm is necessary to foster 21st-century global engineers. There have been significant considerations to devise educational approaches that go beyond the limitations of traditional engineering education for engineering students in Korea. To solve this issue, the Global Education Center for Engineers project was initiated under the aim of developing approaches that transcend the boundaries between schools, disciplines, and countries, and coming up with innovative solutions.
The center engages in diverse projects, including the development and operation of common engineering programs, the provision of comprehensive infrastructure for education services, the promotion of international education and research exchanges, and the provision of industrial workforce training. Through various forms of global engineering education initiatives, the center anticipates that all trainees will grow as internationally recognized engineers and experts and make significant contributions to national development.
