Seoul National University Center for Sustainable Water Management Developed ‘Tori’, an Innovative and Eco-friendly Toilet.

- Development of a toilet that separates manure without using water and makes it into fertilizer
- Installed ‘Chunsoo’ garden at Nowon-gu and signed a joint research agreement with the Nowon City Agricultural Network

The head professor Moo-Young Han of Seoul National University Center for Sustainable Water Management.

Seoul National University (SNU), College of Engineering (dean Kun-woo Lee) announced on June 6th that SNU’s Center for Sustainable Water Management (head professor Moo-young Han) developed an innovative toilet ‘Tori’ that convert manure into fertilizer without using water.

Conventional flush toilets use a large amount of water for washing, and sewage appears while discharging manure. This was perceived as a major cause of water shortages and water pollution problems.

To solve this problem, the research center developed an eco-friendly recycling toilet from the motif of the oriental method, recycling the manure as a ‘fertilizer’ whereas the western style considers the manure as ‘garbage’.

The research center signed a joint research agreement for commercializing and enhancing the applicability of ‘Tori’ by installing it on the Nowon-gu with Nowon City Agricultural Network (Representative Eun-soo Lee). The ceremony will take place at 11:00 AM on June 6th at the ‘Chunsoo’ garden in Nowon-gu.

The superstructure of ‘Tori’    has a residents-friendly appearance which designed by the artist in Nowon-gu. The scientific design of the infrastructure was carried out by SNU. For the next year, they will conduct research on evaluation for amenity and safety, demonstration of fertilizer effect, and practicality with the residents of Nowon-gu.

The results of the joint research will be applied to the garden of other urban farmers and region where water is not supplied, especially for the supplement toilet facilities for developing countries.

Professor Moo-young Han, who is the head of Department of Civil and Environment Engineering at SNU said “I hope that the eco-friendly recycling toilet ‘Tori’, which contains the philosophy of the Republic of Korea, be distributed to all around the world to solve problems of water, sewage, and food production. Thus, I want it to contribute to achieving sustainable development goals, set by the world.
