SNU College of Engineering receives Distinguished Alumni Award

SNU College of Engineering (Dean Lee Kun-woo) has chosen Kwon Oh-Joong (Chairman of POSCO), Kim Jong-Hoon (Chairman of HanmiGlobal) and Kim Ki-Nam (CEO of Samsung Electronics Semi-conductor division) as Distinguished Alumni and the awards ceremony took place on May 31st‘s noon in SNU Engineer House.
SNU College of Engineering’s Distinguished Alumni Award is given to alumni that made significant contribution to advancement in industrial technology or have upheld the honor of SNU through great academic achievement and community service. Since 1993, over 24 awards, 28 have received for overseas activities and 48 have received for domestic activities. The College of Engineering personnel committee has chosen these 3 winners from the recommended candidates.
Kwon Oh-Joong (Chairman of POSCO) graduated from SNU metal engineering, and received his Ph.D. in University of Pittsburgh in 1985. Since his entrance to POSCO in 1986, Chairman Kwon has developed core technologies like automotive steel sheets, and became the chairman in 2014. And in 2016, he received the Korea Best Scientist Award for his activities for engineering technology advancement and cultivation of young talents in 2015 as the chief director of The National Academy of Engineering of Korea, and his contribution to national development through technology innovations.
Kim Jong-Hoon (Chairman of HanmiGlobal) graduated from SNU Department of architecture in 1973, and received his Ph.D. in 2017. In 1984, Chairman Kim entered Samsung C & T Corporation, and since then he successfully completed the Petronas Twin Towers project, which was the world’s tallest building then, as a field manager. Moreover he contributed to the commercialization of skyscrapers construction technology in Korea, making use of his experience. In 1996, he founded HanmiGlobal, introducing advanced Construction Management and Program Management techniques to Korea.
Kim Ki-Nam (CEO of Samsung Electronics Semi-conductor division) graduated from SNU department of electrical engineering in 1981, and received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering in UCLA. Since his entrance to Samsung Electronics in 1981, he has strived to the development of semi-conductor technologies for more than 30 years, contributing to the ascendance of Korea’s Memory & System semi-conductor Industry to the crown. From 2014, he is both the CEO of Samsung Electronics Semi-conductor division and the business manager of System LSI, and is the president of KSIA (Korea Semi-conductor Industry Association), KDIA (Korea Display Industry Association) and KoPEA (Korea Printed Electronics Association), working as a leader in his field.
