SNU College of Engineering (Dean Lee Kun-woo) has announced that researcher Yeom Jun-Hyeok (28) of TAALab of DAAE has won the MOLIT Minister Award in ‘2017 Modern Urban Construction Re-Birth Design Contest’ on last 8th.
This design contest was arranged with the theme of a historical Review of Namsan Mountain and Jangchungdan region, and finding a new function of Namsan Tunnel 2, supported by MOLIT, Cultural Heritage Administration, and Docomomo Korea
Researcher Yeom’s entry <Tunnel of Knowledge – 2017, acquiring a new value by embracing Namsam Tunnel 2> is a Joint entry with Kim Sang-Won (Baum Architects) and Kim Seung-Mo (Samoo Architect & Engineers).

Their work has given a new role of ‘Knowledge storage’ to Namsan Tunnel 2, which was rather a ‘man storage’, as an air-raid shelter. Each space of Namsan Tunnel 2 communicates with the outside world, acting as a waling city connecting Jangchung-dong and Itaewon.
This work was praised by the judges as a ‘masterpiece with expression transcending imagination’, as it has embraced the original tunnel and a greater tunnel, suggesting various programs within. Moreover, they have shown great comprehension of the contest’s purpose of granting a new value through reinterpretation of existing constructions and environment, and have shown another possibility while maintaining a definite system with methodology.
Docomomo Korea is a union of scholars, architects and professionals who aims for the preservation and application of modern cultural heritage through research and public relations. Its design contest is a program arranged to promote public interests on preservation and application of modern cultural heritage, and to cultivate next generation.
This year’s contest sought for city-constructional solutions to heal the scars of the Cold War, and to overcome the tragic history through a historical review of Namsan and Jangchungdan, and a functional replacement of Namsan Tunnel 2, which both the historical and transportational role is drawing to a close.
