Seoul National University College of Engineering announced that the paper about collagen-based scaffolds and meniscus tissue engineering, which was studied by Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Engineering led by Prof. SukYeon Hwang, was awarded the 2017 Best Paper Award by Controlled Release Society (CRS).
The paper “Riboflavin-induced photo-crosslinking of collagen hydrogel and its application in meniscus tissue engineering” by Prof. SukYeon Hwang was considered the most valuable paper among papers which were published in ‘Drug Delivery and Translational Research’ on 2016.
The paper presented the enhancement of the mechanical properties and delay degradation rate of a collagen-based scaffold by photo-crosslinking using riboflavin (RF) and UV exposure. The research team used collagen-based biomedical materials, which have higher mechanical properties, for the meniscus tissue engineering.
Prof. Hwang said “We are planning to promote research about curing cartilage related diseases by introducing stem cells to the collagen-based biomedical materials”
This research was funded by Korea Health Industry Development Institute.
Meanwhile, the CRS is a society that discusses up-to-date research trends and achievements in the field of drug delivery and biomaterials by participating in over 2,000 scholars worldwide every year. The awards ceremony will take place at the annual CRS conference in Boston.
