A research team led by Professor Hyeonsang Eom won Best Paper Award at 2017 IEEE

-jointly researched with Korea Aerospace University and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology(KISTI)
- collaborated with NERSC and Samsung Electronics

Professor Hyeonsang Eom of Seoul National University, Department of Computer Science and Engineering

A research team led by Professor Hyeonsang Eom of Department of Computer Science and Engineering, together with Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Korea Aerospace University won Best Paper Award at 2017 IEEE (Insititute of Electrical and Electronics) that was held in Hawaii on September 7th.

The team collaborated internationally with the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC).

The award-winning paper 'Acceleration of Burst Buffer by User-Level I / O Isolation (I / O) Separation' introduced I/O stream separation technique based on recent SSD multi-stream technique, which is based on high-performance Vertical NAND. The paper prove that it can increase the performance by twice during excessive I / O processing.

A SNU student Jaehyun Han visited NERSC in the United States and obtained the actual workload of the latest Cori supercomputer. Based on this, a small test bed was built at the KISTI supercomputing center and experiments were conducted. In particular, the long-term cooperation between KISTI and NERSC have played a major role in obtaining the Cori supercomputer data.

In addition, through technology collaboration with Samsung Electronics' Memory Solution Development Department, they were able to conduct studies on high performance computing technique with recent storage devices without difficulties. Therefore, Korea that lagged behind in the field of high performance computing succeeded in obtaining recent software techniques. It is expected to be seen as a good example of Korea’s acquisition of the latest supercomputing core I / O technology based on international cooperation with the support of Korean government.

Professor Eom said, "Since the proposed technology proved that I / O performance can be accelerated in a high performance computing environment, NERSC is discussing building a mid-size test bed to apply the research results to a variety of actual science applications. This will contribute to the export of software and hardware technology that Korea has been researching and developing in the future."

The research was conducted thanks to the financial support of Institute for Information & communication Technology Promotion (IITP) and Brain Korea 21.

Meanwhile, The IEEE Cluster Society is the highest-level conference in the field of high-performance computing and distributed computing and is recognized as one of the world's leading academic societies. In particular, only 21.8% of the 216 published papers were presented at this conference.
